Regions in Uganda

About Regions in Uganda

Uganda's four administrative regions serve primarily as a geographical and statistical framework rather than functioning as operational governance units with executive authority. These regions—Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western—represent the highest administrative division in Uganda's three-level hierarchy and are used mainly for planning, data collection, and coordination purposes by the national government. Unlike districts and lower administrative units, regions do not have their own elected officials or dedicated budgets. Instead, they facilitate regional development planning, help organize the delivery of national services, and provide a structure for administrative oversight across multiple districts. The regional framework enables the central government to analyze demographic trends, allocate resources, and implement policies across broad geographic areas while actual governance functions remain concentrated at the district and sub-district levels.
