Districts in Serbia

About Districts in Serbia

Serbia is divided into 25 districts, which serve as the first level of administrative organization in the country's two-tier territorial structure. Districts function primarily as intermediate administrative units between the national government and municipalities, facilitating the coordination of public services and regional development. They oversee the implementation of national policies at the regional level and manage matters related to healthcare, education, infrastructure, and spatial planning. While districts lack their own elected assemblies and significant autonomous powers, they play an important role in administrative deconcentration by housing regional branches of various ministries and state institutions. The district administrations collect statistical data, coordinate inter-municipal cooperation, and serve as a framework for organizing public services that extend beyond individual municipal boundaries.
