States in Micronesia

About States in Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is divided into 4 states, which constitute the country's sole level of subnational administration. These states—Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosova—exercise substantial autonomy under the federal system, maintaining their own constitutions, governors, and legislatures. Each state controls its internal affairs, including local taxation, education, health services, and traditional land tenure systems. This high degree of decentralization reflects the geographic dispersal of the island nation across the western Pacific and the distinct cultural identities of each state. State governments serve as the primary interface between citizens and public services, handling matters such as infrastructure development, law enforcement, and regulation of local commerce. The federal government in Palikir retains authority over foreign affairs, defense, and certain national programs, but the states possess considerable legislative and administrative powers that shape daily governance throughout Micronesia.
