Dominica is divided into 10 parishes, which constitute the country's sole administrative subdivision level. These parishes serve primarily as geographic and electoral units rather than functioning as independent governing bodies with significant autonomous powers. The parish system originated during British colonial rule and has been retained for organizational purposes, including the administration of elections, census data collection, and the delivery of certain government services at the local level. Each parish is overseen by centrally appointed officials who coordinate with the national government in Roseau. While parishes do not have their own legislatures or substantial budgetary authority, they remain important for organizing community development projects, disaster management coordination, and maintaining local infrastructure under the direction of relevant national ministries.
