Districts (okresy) form the second and lowest administrative level in Czechia, with 77 districts currently in operation across the country. These units primarily serve statistical and territorial identification purposes, as most of their former administrative functions were abolished in 2003 during reforms that transferred responsibilities to regions and municipalities. Districts remain significant for organizing certain state services, including branches of the police, courts, and some specialized agencies. They also function as electoral districts and are used for data collection by the Czech Statistical Office. While districts no longer have their own self-governing bodies or elected representatives, they continue to be referenced in official addresses and maintain relevance for administrative coordination between the regional and municipal levels.
