Districts in Bhutan

About Districts in Bhutan

Bhutan is divided into 20 districts, known as dzongkhags, which serve as the primary administrative divisions of the country. These districts function as the sole subnational administrative level, reporting directly to the central government. Each district is headed by a dzongda (district governor) appointed by the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs. Districts are responsible for implementing national policies at the local level, coordinating public services including healthcare and education, maintaining law and order, and overseeing development projects within their jurisdictions. They also facilitate communication between the central government and local communities, manage district-level budgets, and ensure the delivery of essential government services to citizens across their territories.
