Mukims in Brunei Darussalam

About Mukims in Brunei Darussalam

Mukims serve as the second and lowest administrative division in Brunei Darussalam's governmental structure, positioned directly below the four districts (daerahs). The country contains 39 mukims in total, which function as subdivisions for local governance and administrative coordination. Each mukim is headed by a penghulu (chief), who acts as a liaison between the district administration and village-level leadership. Mukims facilitate the delivery of government services, maintain civil records, and assist in implementing national policies at the community level. They also play a role in organizing local consultative councils and addressing matters related to land administration, community welfare, and traditional customs. This administrative framework enables the national government to maintain effective oversight across Brunei's relatively small territory while preserving local administrative traditions inherited from the Malay sultanate system.
