Armenia is divided into 11 provinces, known as marzer (singular: marz), which constitute the country's primary administrative divisions. These provinces serve as the intermediate level of governance between the national government and local municipalities, responsible for implementing state policies and coordinating regional development. Each province is administered by a governor appointed by the central government, who oversees matters including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development within their jurisdiction. The provincial system facilitates the distribution of public services across Armenia's regions and provides a framework for territorial administration outside the capital city of Yerevan, which functions as a separate administrative entity with special status.
