Departaments in Honduras

Honduras is divided into 18 departaments, which constitute the second and final level of administrative subdivision in the country's territorial organization. These departaments serve as intermediate governmental units between the national government and local municipalities, handling regional coordination of public services, infrastructure development, and administrative oversight. Each departament is headed by a governor appointed by the President and maintains offices that facilitate the implementation of national policies at the regional level. The departaments also play a role in coordinating healthcare, education, and public works projects within their jurisdictions, though much of the direct service delivery occurs at the municipal level. This administrative structure allows Honduras to balance centralized governance with regional needs across its diverse geographic and demographic landscape.
