Districts in Gambia

Districts serve as the second and lowest tier of administrative division in Gambia, with 43 districts operating beneath the regional level. These districts function as the primary units for local governance and public administration, managing essential services such as healthcare delivery, primary education oversight, agricultural extension programs, and local infrastructure maintenance. District authorities coordinate government initiatives at the community level, collect local revenue, and serve as intermediaries between central government bodies and village-level communities. The district structure enables the implementation of national policies while addressing localized needs across both urban and rural areas. District chiefs and appointed administrators work alongside elected representatives to maintain civil order, resolve local disputes, and facilitate development projects within their jurisdictions.
